We Are Each Other
San Francisco based group The Retrospective asked me to participate in a bi-monthly feature on their site titled “We Are Each Other.” The premise is to have an open dialog with designers about what influences them. I was honored to be a part of their project, which gave me pause to think about the importance of having an open dialog among peers.
Since moving to Minneapolis I have had the good fortune of meeting and becoming friends with incredibly talented designers and typographers. We are all open about our influences, process & share our ideas. This openness allows for stronger ideation and helps us understand each other’s point-of-view.
I approached my good friend Mike Cina about furthering my education in design. He informed me that a lot of his design education was learned through reading classic design literature. Over the next week or two Mike compiled a list of books that he saw as important to any designer’s education. Not only was this list beneficial to myself, he also used the list on the YWFT Web site. For those curious, you can find the list here.
Because Mike was willing to share his personal favorite books, I have been able to better educate myself about the theories of graphic design. I like to think that being featured on the Retrospective is the culmination of my continuing education. I only hope that this is the beginning, and more adventures will be on the horizon.
My feature is currently on the Retrospective.
